A man in his 60s has been confirmed dead after a car drove off the fourth floor of the parking garage at Sandvika shopping center on Monday evening. The police say the incident appears to be a pure accident. The car landed right outside the entrance to the centre. – Fortunately, no one else was injured as a result of the car falling down, even though there were many people outside the centre, says police task leader Anders Rønning. The emergency services went to the car park in Bærum just after 8pm on Monday evening. The car drove out from the fourth floor. A witness news has spoken to was at work in a shop close to the accident. He says he thought it was an earthquake at first. – It was incredibly dramatic. Inside the centre, not many people thought it was a car crash and on the public address system we were told to evacuate the centre. When he came out, he spotted the car a few meters away from the entrance. – People wondered where this car came from. But when we looked up there was a hole in the wall, because the car had driven out. There were bricks all over the place, says the witness. IN PLACE: The emergency services are in place. Task leader Kristian Digranes says the man in his 60s got into the car when it was parked on the fourth floor. He then drove through a wall, before the car hit the ground below the car park. It has not been established that the car was bolted on, according to the project manager. – We are still working on that on site, says Digranes. The police are still talking to witnesses, and are working to obtain video surveillance from the area. The Swedish Road Administration’s accident team is on the scene. In cooperation with the police, they will investigate why and how the accident occurred. The car drove out from this part of the car park on the fourth floor. Sandvika shopping center was closed on Monday evening as a result of the accident. It is expected that the center will remain open as normal on Tuesday.
