Fox News had to hand over both text messages and e-mails to Dominion’s lawyers. It became extra embarrassing when it emerged that Carlson had sent several racy text messages about the former president. Among other things, that he was looking forward to the day when he doesn’t have to deal with Trump. – I hate him passionately, Carlson wrote about Trump in an SMS to his producer in January 2021, two days before Trump supporters stormed the US Congress on January 6. He can easily destroy us if we play this game wrong”. Carlson was to testify Dominion therefore argued that Fox News, in pursuit of higher ratings, knowingly and willfully spread lies that damaged their reputation. The election company demanded 1.6 billion dollars in damages. And subpoenaed several of the channel’s celebrities – including Tucker Carlson – as a witness in addition to Fox owner Rupert Murdoch, the well-known media mogul. The settlement was entered into when the trial was due to start. – We acknowledge the court’s ruling that some of the allegations against Dominion are false, Fox said in a statement when the settlement was announced. But he is also one of the most controversial. Politically, he is far to the right, and he often uses strong words against what he calls “the elite” and “political correctness”. Critics believe he has deliberately used racist and hateful rhetoric which has fueled polarization in the US. And he has been accused of spreading conspiracy theories in prime time. So far, Tucker Carlson himself has not commented on the departure.
