– On Sørøya we now have generators as an emergency solution, several people have had their electricity restored. That’s what Gudrun Rollefsen says, who is general manager of the power company Lucerna. – We have found a fault, but there are probably more, so people are on their way out to repair and look for more. They are working to rectify the errors and say several people have had their power restored. – The most important thing is to get organized transport out to the islands, some are already booked and more are on the way. Lurcerna’s fitters are working to restore power to the island communities affected by the blackout. Wang is a plow driver and is part of the emergency cooperation Seiland has with Hammerfest municipality. He says the storm has not had major consequences for the residents. – The residents have managed well, there was one person who didn’t get water for his coffee this morning, but we managed to sort it out. Photo: Sunniva Hadland Bøthun / news School was hit by a power cut The broken power poles in Seiland meant that several people were left without power, including at the school in Akkarfjord. – It happens very often with us, now we sit here and work on the PC and have school with blankets and headlamps. That’s what Helene Yvonne (15) and Trym Hansen (16) say. They are students at Akkarfjord School, which has been hit by a power cut, and they are now waiting for the temperature to drop enough for them to go home. – It will soon be dark, and I have a dog at home, so I would rather be at home than sit here, says Helene Yvonne. The school at Akkarfjord got the power back this morning. It is an aggregate that ensures the school’s electricity until the crews of Lucerna have made it to Sørøya. Trym Hansen (16) and Helene Yvonne (15) are the only students at the school in Akkarfjord. Both they and the surrounding islands were affected by power cuts and had to use blankets to keep warm. Photo: Liv Ann Hansen The weather presents challenges But the ravaging weather makes it difficult to transport the workers out to the affected islands, which is why Lucerna has organized boat transport for the workers. – The most important thing is to get organized transport out to the islands, some are already booked and more are on the way, says Rollefsen. Mayor of Hasvik municipality, Lars Hustad, says the situation so far is under control and says it is up to the power companies to correct the error. – We received a message yesterday about a fault on the 66 kW line between Porsa and Sørøybotn, says the mayor of Hasvik municipality, Lars Hustad. Hustad states that it may be appropriate to set up emergency staff if the power outage is prolonged. Asking people to ration electricity Hammerfest municipality writes in a press release that Sørøya is currently supplied by an emergency generator in Akkarfjord and Breivikbotn, but the capacity is limited. They are asking people to conserve electricity until the fault is fixed. – We have sent out a message to those who live on the islands to save on electricity, so that as many people as possible can get the electricity they need, says Øyvind Hansen, operations manager at the power company Lucerna.
