They had hoped to become a far greater factor in Greenlandic politics. Nalaraq, the most progressive independence party, must be said to have been the most active in the election campaign. For that is this question that has characterized the election campaign: When and how will the island detach itself from Denmark? Quickly, has been the response to Nalaraq, who will look more towards the United States. With orange caps and sunglasses, the party has simply made its mark on the street scene in the capital Nuuk this past week. And they have received attention, even from the rest of the world. The upturn, the media pressure and the trailer were so great that the party had to move the night’s election watch from a hotel in the city to a assembly room a little outside. FESTIVAL: The Naleraq supporters were very festive during the evening, but it did not quite hold in. Photo: Joakim Reigstad / news At the opposite end, at a small inn in the center, the social liberal party Democraters had gathered. Idologically, we can compare them with the Left in Norway. Two long tables. A little potato gold on the tables and music. A soda box for 65 Norwegian kroner – you cannot distribute free soft drinks when you are a “tiny little lot”. Democrats did not receive the attention of the world press at all. There were news and a couple of local media there in the beginning. The party has been very careful in the independence issue. Although they think it is the final goal, they will hurry slowly and work for a good relationship with Denmark. So the election results began to enter the night hours. And it must be said to have been a political earthquake we witnessed. The Trump effect that disappeared it started recipe. Naleraq took many votes on the outskirts of the country. But at the same time, the democraters also gathered more than expected in more remote areas. The government parties Inuit Ataqatigiit and Siumut, one socialist and the other social democratic, had to realize early on that their majority was going to smoke. They ended up at 21 and 14 per cent respectively. For both a clear decline. US President Donald Trump has been accused of trying to influence the election in Greenland. Photo: Alex Brandon / AP / NTB just over 4 o’clock Norwegian time, 1 in Nuuk, the Greenlandic public broadcaster reported that it was impossible to take down the Democrats. They became the big winner of the election with around 30 percent. Even the party leader seemed surprised where he was overwhelmed with hugs by the supporters. Did we see a reverse Trump effect? Several asked this question. Have the US president’s statements to take over Greenland in “somehow” frightened the Greenlanders away from the uncertain independence struggle and into the more safe – to preserve the ties to Denmark? Democrats became the largest party in Greenland. Photo: Joakim Reigstad / news It may not be the result Donald Trump wanted – on the contrary. Because there is no doubt. Those who have shouted highest on independence did not quite get the cheering night they had wanted. Those who have mentions for caution and to remain in the national community with Denmark-for the time being, were those who went mostly cheering in the Nuuk night. Good, but not good enough, Nalaraq makes a very good choice compared to earlier. There is no doubt about that. They end up well over 20 percent. But it didn’t quite hold the goal. They had been dependent on a greater support to really make a difference and force Greenland to raise the speed of the independence struggle. It was almost as irony was noticeable when the conference room closed at 00.30 and everyone was asked to go. Then the party led and lay the biggest. But just as people went down the stairs, the voices from Nuuk came in and changed the entire game board. The next half hour reinforced the impression. It was the Democrats who became the big, big surprise of the election. There was more optimism at Naleraq earlier in the day. The election result is good. One probably not good enough to get influence. Photo: Joakim Reigstad / news Now is not over, but the Democrats can probably choose who they want to work with to create a majority. They can choose to take their conservative friends in Atassut into the heat. But they can also go to the Social Democrats in Siumut and create a blocking government. In any case, everything is now ready for the first time in history to become a prime minister from the right -hand side in Greenland, when Jens Frederik Nielsen is likely to take over that post from Múte Bourup Egede. The government negotiations can take a few days – or weeks. Half a month is the deadline. The relationship between Denmark and Greenland Photo: Joakim Reigstad / news The national community constitutes Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland (Kingdom Denmark) When Greenland ended up under Danish rule after World War II, Greenland was considered a county (a county) in Denmark. In 1975, work began on finding another form of government for Greenland In 1979, Greenland got its own country and home government. In 2009, Greenland received self -government, with the exception of some areas. Denmark is responsible for defense, security and foreign policy. As well as economic policy. Residents of Greenland become Danish citizens. Every year, Denmark is obliged to transfer a so -called block supplement (just over DKK 4 billion). The Authority Act in 2009 allows Greenland to take control of more than 30 areas (eg criminal care, the judiciary, safety of sea and meteorology). So long they have taken control of three (raw material, working environment offshore and amendment of time zones) in the Authority Act (section 21), it states that Greenland can become fully independent after a referendum and negotiations with the Danish government. Requires major changes that have been talked about independence in Greenland for many years. Actually, without the fact that neither changing Danish governments nor the world have raised the eyebrows so much. But then a spiral sandal came to the surface – and the mind against Denmark increased. And with the US President, Donald Trump’s repeated statements. First about “buying” Greenland in 2019 and now this year by “taking over” Greenland, the question of independence has become a hot potato on the world’s largest island. That’s also what everyone was concerned about – was thought. Many that show their opposition to Denmark. But the election results do not bid that the independence struggle will go faster. Photo: Joakim Reigstad / news But we got a small indication in some voter surveys last week. Although the method is a bit unclear (it is not a random selection) and therefore not quite a hundred percent, they showed that most people in Greenland were concerned with finances, education, health and safety. So more typical election campaign cases. The actual question of independence came further down the list. And in a sample choice at the high school in Nuuk, the Democrats actually got the most votes. This may indicate that it is the young people who have pulled in the brake and said that one should wait to enter into a negotiation of independence. Is independence possible? For is independence realistic for Greenland? It is not impossible, but it involves quite large restructuring. Fisheries currently account for 90 per cent of Greenland’s export revenues. Photo: Joakim Reigstad / news in both the economy – it must be significantly refurbished. They need to put in place more educational institutions – especially higher education, so that fewer students have to travel to Denmark to attend university. Then you have to renovate the health care system and the prison system emphatically. It will take time – and the Democrats repeated almost to the boring through the election campaign. And was heard. And at least it is not the case that the independence movement is dead. Greenland wants independence, but the road there is still long. Photo: Joakim Reigstad / news But it is not true either that it is either or for Greenland in the future. Several have argued that Greenland, as an independent country, can work closely with both Canada, Iceland and Norway. There, all countries have great interests in the northern areas, and can become a real factor of power in the high north. The United States is also mentioned – as a partner – not as a new colonist. This year’s election in Greenland is perhaps the most exciting ever. But that Greenland will start cutting the ties to Denmark over the next four years now – it seems less likely now than a few hours ago. In that sense, the election’s biggest loser is US President Donald Trump. Published 12.03.2025, at. 07.19
