The man who is charged with gross embezzlement has worked for the police in Møre and Romsdal for many years. Now he himself is the focus of serious crime. According to the charges, he has taken with him police equipment worth almost NOK 700,000. He is said to have kept most of this at home, while goods worth over NOK 200,000 were sold to others. According to news’s understanding, there must be, among other things, an extensive collection of used police uniforms, belts, lanterns, tools and casual clothing for a number of years. – This is of course a matter we are looking at seriously because it can contribute to weakening trust in the police, says the head of the Special Unit for Police Affairs, Terje Nybøe to news. He adds that the value of the items the policeman is charged with having sold is greater than in any other such case the Special Investigation Unit has had on its table. – It is probably the most serious case we have had within this category of offence, confirms Nybøe. She recently asked for closed doors and a record ban when the case goes to court in two weeks. She points out that mentioning the case will be a great burden for the former policeman and his family. But she was not granted the claim. “There is no evidence that the accused and his family are exposed to greater burdens than others in similar cases … That the accused, as a former employee of the police, will suffer a loss of integrity if he were to be sentenced in line with the charge which refers to “violation of a especially trust that comes with a position”, does not change the court’s assessment”, concludes the Frostating Court of Appeal. The former policeman has admitted what he is accused of, and the case is therefore a so-called confession case. This means that it will be a simplified trial, among other things with only one judge. – He has accepted the facts, says his defender, Gry Schrøder Berger. According to Sunnmørsposten, the policeman was suspended when the police became aware of the case. Afterwards, he is said to have resigned. According to what news understands, it was former colleagues who raised the alarm when they discovered that he had posted advertisements for used police equipment for sale.
