17 February 2024 at 11:58 Peace researcher Johan Galtung is dead Sociologist and researcher Johan Galtung died on Saturday morning, aged 93. He was central to the creation of peace research as a discipline. Johan Galtung’s son, Andreas Galtung, tells NTB that his father died peacefully at Stabekk Health Center in Bærum on Saturday morning after a long illness. Galtung was born on 24 October 1930, and trained as a mathematician and sociologist at the University of Oslo. He is considered the founder of the field of peace research, was central to the creation of the Institute for Peace Research (PRIO) in 1959, where he was the first director. In recent years, Galtung has lived in Alfas del Pi in Spain with his spouse Fumiko Nishimura Galtung. He is also survived by four children. (NTB)
