Rainbow flags flew in the air and bouquets of flowers were handed out after the law was passed in the National Assembly. – The law represents a monumental step in the right direction for LGBTQ rights in Thailand, Panyaphon Phiphatkhunarnon, founder of the Love Foundation, told CNN. The upper house of Thailand’s National Assembly voted on Tuesday 18 June on the bill that will make same-sex marriage legal. Of the representatives, 130 voted for and only 4 voted against the proposal. The law will thus be forwarded for the signature of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, which is considered a mere formality, and will then come into force after 120 days. This will make Thailand the third country in the Asian region to legalize same-sex marriage, after Taiwan and Nepal. The amendment will give same-sex couples the right to adoption and inheritance. The country will also change the references to “men”, “women”, “husbands” and “wives” to gender-neutral terms.
