Alternative solutions have been considered so that employees at Haga School in Holmestrand will be able to go to a seminar. The school will merge with Sande secondary school in the autumn. Therefore, the management of the two schools wants the employees to go away for two days to create a common culture. The majority did not want the solution The parents at Haga school were asked to take over these days. But now 63 percent of the parents at Haga school have told FAU that they are against this solution, writes Sande avis. – I am not surprised by the outcome. There is a lot that needs to be done in order for so many people to be able to take time off, says leader Anita Leifsen-Christoffersen of FAU at Haga school in Holmestrand municipality. Are you positive that parents can take over the school for short periods? Unanswered questions Only 27 of the parents could ask one or both days, she says. She says there is a need for over 100 parents to take care of the children during school hours and after-school hours these two days. – A lot of questions remained unanswered and made the parents unsure. There were also several people who could not take time off from their own jobs, says Leifsen-Christoffersen. She says the parents wondered if the children were safe and which activities were to be carried out, among other things. Discussion In the comments section of news on Facebook, opinions have been divided: “Schools that propose this must also think about privacy and confidentiality,” wrote one. “We have done this at our school, and it was completely unproblematic! The scheme is simple and straightforward. The teachers had prepared plans for each lesson/subject. Quizzes, training activities, etc. Pleasant activities that suited each individual subject,” wrote another. Sorry Principal Terje Larsen at Sande secondary school says that a parent-led school will not happen since the majority of parents at Haga school have said no. He himself has good experiences from another school where they had a parent-led school. He apologizes if the parents at Haga School have not received enough information about the scheme. – But we have tried to plan to provide information at a meeting and by sending out information letters. Terje Larsen is principal at Sande secondary school. He will also be the principal of the new merged school. Photo: Magnus Skatvedt Iversen / news Great engagement He has noticed great engagement on Facebook when the media have written about this case. The FAU leader has also seen that people have opinions on this matter. – The engagement has been very matter-of-fact, says Leifsen-Christoffersen. She has spoken to parents who have been positive and concerned. The municipal management has said yes. Municipal manager Inga Marie Klæboe Faleide in Holmestrand municipality says the idea was that the students should have an alternative plan that was pedagogically sound for these two days. She says it was never meant for parents to step in as teachers. Confidentiality and a police certificate were also considered. Now they arrange for employees in the municipality’s administration to be with the children. This means that the employees can go away one afternoon and have a seminar day the following day. – Both the municipal director, municipal managers and advisors within schools are willing to stand up. Then we will ask if other schools have substitutes we can use that day, says Faleide. Must be pedagogically sound The scheme has not yet been decided. But Faleide imagines that the pupils will be visited by “The cultural school bag” that day. – We need to know that we can have it pedagogically sound and that there is a good system around children and young people. Then we can go for it. The new Klokkerjordet school is under construction. Pupils from Haga school and Sande secondary school will go here from August. Photo: Magnus Skatvedt Iversen / news
