Oxford High School Seniors Reflect on Their Journey to Graduation
Seniors from Oxford High School are preparing to attend their graduation ceremony this Thursday at Pine Knob. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone for this class, as they are the last group of students to graduate after a tragic mass shooting in November 2021, which took the lives of four classmates—Tate Myre, Madisyn Baldwin, Justin Shilling, and Hana St. Juliana.
Aiden Watson’s Resilience and Growth
One of the students, Aiden Watson, embodies the spirit of survival and resilience. When asked about the significance of crossing the graduation stage, Aiden reflected, "Crossing that stage is going to be a big moment in my life." His journey has not been an easy one; he was one of the seven students injured during the shooting.
"I barely attended my freshman year and had limited attendance during my sophomore and junior years," he recounted, highlighting the profound impact that the shooting has had on his education. His mother, Linda, expressed her deep emotions surrounding those harrowing days, saying, "To hear his heartbeat when we brought him home from the hospital, it was all a mix of hurt, sadness, anger, and gratitude."
Despite the emotional and physical scars, Aiden has shown tremendous growth. He attributes much of his success to supportive teachers and family. He said, "I take classes at Oakland Community College and have achieved impressive grades." Looking forward, Aiden hopes to obtain an associate’s degree and pursue a career in electrical engineering or technology.

Community support plays a vital role in Aiden’s healing journey. "There’s a significant portion of the community that really did step up," Linda noted. This network of support has made a profound difference, reinforcing the importance of connection during challenging times.
Luke Johnson: Carrying Forward a Legacy
Another senior, Luke Johnson, faced his own battles after losing his close friend Tate Myre. "I realized I had to acknowledge what happened and how I could move forward," Luke shared. His pain transformed into motivation, fostering resilience through his achievements in sports. As a champion wrestler and future Wayne State University football player, Luke honors his friend by wearing Tate’s number in games.
Luke acknowledges the collective trauma that the students experienced that day: "We all were there. We experienced the same thing in different ways." He has taken on a mentorship role, providing support to those who may be struggling, reflecting Tate’s legacy of friendship and guidance.
The Continued Impact of Loss
Luke’s mother, Kristina, emphasized the ongoing emotional journey for victims’ families. "There are many who will never forget. We wake up every day and think about it," she said, acknowledging the shared grief among students and their families.
Phoebe Arthur: Hope for a Brighter Future
Phoebe Arthur, another graduating senior, has her own story of survival. Her mother, Sandra Cunningham, shared the challenges Phoebe has faced since the shooting. "It’s not what we thought it would be," she stated, reflecting on their expectations for graduation day. Sandra hopes for a future filled with happiness for her daughter, "Something that has nothing to do with thinking about this."
Phoebe has shown immense strength in her recovery. "She worked so hard to get better, even communicating while still in a tracheostomy," Sandra said. As they reflect on their experiences, both mothers express a blend of pride and sadness on the cusp of graduation.

The journey toward healing and moving forward will be unique for each student. "Everyone is going to recover differently and grieve differently," Sandra pointed out, underscoring the need for individualized support and acceptance of varied emotional journeys.
