Over 20 hens were sucked out of the hen house on Åmnes farm in Meløy and died – news Nordland

There has been a lot of weather in recent days around the country. Buses blew off the road, old houses sailed into the sea and in Lofoten a car workshop collapsed. At Åmnes Gård in Meløy municipality in Nordland, it was dramatic when the garage roof was blown off. – We were sitting at the dinner table and suddenly we see the roof of the garage flying past. It was quite scary, especially for the children, says Steffi. The husband afterwards discovered damage to both the car, fence and gates. – The children aged nine and seven started crying when they saw the garage roof and wondered if the house was also going to be destroyed. The garage roof was blown off during the ravages of the storm. Photo: Privat – Like in a cartoon The evening went a long way to calming the children who were anxious, she says. On Thursday morning, the family was surprised when the dog came into the house carrying a hen in its mouth. When they went to check the chicken coop they found three more chickens, all dead. The storm was more dramatic than Steffi and Magne Setvik had imagined. All the hens had cuts. Steffi says the only possibility is that a form of draft has arisen which has sucked the hens out of the vent, which is the only way out of the hen house. – We saw last night that plates had come loose in places where the wind doesn’t really come. You imagine a plane that gets a hole in it, and everyone gets sucked out. It’s like in a cartoon. The biggest destruction at Åmnes Gård is covered by the insurance. He can only remember a similar storm once before, around 15 years ago. Then the roof blew off. Now the married couple have reported the biggest damages to the insurance company. They don’t get anything left for the hens, but Steffi says they have ordered new ones today. – It takes some time before you get them and they start laying eggs. Now they have to use some of the savings and take the time to help after the loss of the more than 20 hens, she says. The insurance company IF tells news that nearly 80 damage reports related to storms and rainfall have been reported in recent days. Claims center manager Ann Tove Heitmann says that it has mainly been roofs that have suffered damage. – We also see garage doors that have been blown in and small parts flying around, occasionally a trampoline.
