There is talk of an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in hospitals and municipal health institutions in Oslo, as well as the hospital in Østfold. Enterococci are a type of intestinal bacteria that are resistant to several types of antibiotics, writes the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) in a press release. This makes it difficult to treat such infections. So far, 65 people have been confirmed infected. In most cases, the bacterium has not led to illness. – VRE does not usually lead to illness, but can cause serious infections in weakened people. It is therefore a national goal to avoid this bacterium becoming established in health institutions, says senior physician Ragnhild Raastad at FHI in a press release.
