There is talk of an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in hospitals and municipal health institutions in Oslo, as well as the hospital in Østfold. Enterococci are a type of intestinal bacteria that are resistant to several types of antibiotics according to FHI. So far, 65 people have been confirmed infected, but the bacterium has not led to illness in most cases, according to FHI. – VRE does not usually lead to illness, but can cause serious infections in weakened people. It is therefore a national goal to avoid this bacterium becoming established in health institutions, says senior physician Ragnhild Raastad at FHI in a press release. The most important measures to avoid the spread of the bacteria are good hand hygiene and good cleaning.
