Oslo’s youngest city council representative has resigned from Unge Høyre – Greater Oslo

news corrects: In an earlier version of this case, we quoted Arina Aamir as saying that the decision violated human rights. Reception of quota refugees is, however, an agreement between the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and certain countries, including Norway. In Norway, it is the Storting that decides the number of quota refugees. 18-year-old Arina Aamir has today resigned from Unge Høyre. She confirms this to news. The reason for the resignation is a decision that was made at Unge Høyre’s national meeting on Saturday afternoon. There they were to vote on a new immigration policy. And adopted, among other things, this: “Do not accept quota refugees as long as Norway has an integration backlog.” That makes Aamir react. – We have an obligation with the UN to accept quota refugees. And these are people who need help, says Aamir. So she made the choice and signed off on Saturday evening. – It is not politics that I can stand for, and that is why I have opted out. And it is not something Oslo Conservative Party or Conservative Party stand for either. Aamir emphasizes that she will remain in the parent party Høyre. VG reported that she notified her resignation first. In addition to Aamir, another of Høyre’s city council representatives has also signed up: 22-year-old Jenny Helene Syse. No to quota refugees Young Conservative leader Ola Svenneby believes the decision from the national assembly is not as drastic as Aamir’s. Photo: Amanda Iversen Orlich / n649101 Young Conservative leader Ola Svenneby explains the decision as follows to VG: – We want to stop granting permanent residence, but only grant temporary residence and to expand the opportunity to come to Norway as a migrant worker. He himself has advocated a full stop on immigration, and believes that today’s decision does not go that far, according to VG. Last year, Aamir was elected to the city council in Oslo, as the youngest representative ever. And earlier this year she announced that she wants to run for the Storting as a candidate for Oslo. Both Aamir and Syse will continue to be members of the Conservative Party and represent the party in Oslo City Council. Published 22.06.2024, at 19.09 Updated 22.06.2024, at 20.10
