The police in Tysnes have now released the name of the boy who died in the canoe accident at Kyrkjevatnet on Thursday 16 July. It was the six-year-old Oliver Nordøy-Økland from Tysnes who lost his life. The name is published in consultation with the family. – Sad case – We have completed the investigation and have sufficiently clarified what happened. This is a sad case, where three children aged six to seven played and bathed in the area and a six-year-old boy fell into the water and disappeared, says Terje Sperrevik, police station chief in Kvam, Samnanger and Tysnes. He confirms that there is no suspicion that anything criminal has happened. The accident happened when the three children were playing with a canoe that was deployed right next to the new day trip cabin by Kyrkjevatnet. According to the police, the parents did not know that the children were by the water, nor had they allowed them to go there. It was the other two children who announced that an accident had occurred. Crews from the fire brigade, the police and the health service quickly arrived at the scene and started searching for the boy. Life-saving first aid was implemented before he was flown to Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen. There, the boy was declared dead shortly after arrival. The police station chief expresses great sympathy with the boy’s parents and other relatives. – This is a very demanding time for the family, there can be little doubt about that, says Sperrevik. There are other boats and canoes around. We may have to take experience of this and see if measures can be taken to prevent this from happening again, says Sperrevik.
