British journalist Dom Philips and Brazilian indigenous expert Bruno Pereira were on a business trip in the remote Javari area of the Amazon. They were reported missing last Sunday. According to Reuters, a health card belonging to Pereira has been found in the area. The backpack was tied to a tree that was partially submerged, a firefighter told reporters in the town of Atalaia do Norte, which is the nearest town to the search area. It is fall season in the region, and parts of the forest area are flooded. Local indigenous activists say that Philips and Pereira received threats last week while working in the region. The local indigenous association that Pereira worked with says they can not determine who the bag belongs to. In the area, there are only poor settlements along the river, and equipment such as a laptop is rare. A man suspected of being involved in the disappearance has been arrested. Witnesses say he followed the boat of Philips and Pereira, and blood was found on a tarpaulin in his boat.
