In recent years, the number of abortions in Norway has been historically low. But in 2022 they went up, for the first time in 15 years. And the increase continued in 2023. This is shown by recent figures from the Abortion Register, which were published on Thursday morning. Increase among teenagers In 2023, 12,814 pregnancies were terminated in Norway. This is an increase of 6.7 per cent from the previous year. The increase applies to all age groups, shows the latest overview from the Abortion Register. Also for teenagers. Abortions among those aged between 15 and 19 were at a historic low in 2020, before it has now started to rise. The regional variations for abortions in Norway are large. Finnmark, Troms and Oslo had the most abortions last year. The fewest were in Rogaland, Møre og Romsdal and Telemark. More abortions – fewer births While the abortion rate points upwards, the number of births is still falling, FHI points out. Abortion is done either medically or surgically. More than nine out of ten abortions last year were performed medically. This ultrasound image was taken during pregnancy week 11/12. Photo: news The vast majority of abortions in Norway last year were self-inflicted. We have an abortion law which states that we can terminate pregnancies up to week 12. Those who want to have an abortion after this must apply to the abortion board. In December, however, the abortion committee came up with a proposal to extend the limit for self-determined abortion to week 18.
