– What happened here was very decisive, says Trond Giske about his chances of a place in the Storting after the election next year. He received a total of 104 votes against 68 votes for Tung in the battle for first place for Trondheim Ap. – I have to admit that I was very excited, because I thought it was going to be very jammed. That was what was predicted. And then there was an overwhelming result. It was touching, he adds. – What I have to do now is win the election. So that Karianne Tung and all the others can continue as ministers, says Giske. Photo: Bjarte Johannesen / news Tonight’s meeting in the representative council aimed to decide who Trondheim Ap wants to get into the Storting. But who ends up at the top of the Storting’s list for the Labor Party in Sør-Trøndelag election will finally be decided on 30 November. Then both the list for Trondheim Ap and the other municipal parties will be assessed. Nevertheless, Giske feels confident as the first candidate for Trondheim Ap. – After all, Trondheim has almost 2/3 of the voters in Sør-Trøndelag. We have 75% of the members in Sør-Trøndelag Ap, so Trondheim must be high on the list. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) tells news that he has respect for the outcome of the meeting. – I have great confidence in the county party doing its job, and this is a party team in Trøndelag, so let the process go there. They make the decision and take responsibility for it, said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) to news after the evening’s party leader debate. – People like you and they don’t like you. Trond Giske answers optimistically if the road back to the Storting is open to him. – Trondheim Ap does not want that. This was a powerful experience, says Giske. – There are those who think that you don’t belong in politics after the me-too case. What do you think about it? – There were many who thought I had no place in politics before that. So that politicians are discussed where some are for and others against, that is ancient. And I just have to put up with it, replies Giske. – Do you think it is outdated? – It will never become obsolete to be for and against politicians. We must be elected, people agree and disagree. People like you and they don’t like you. – I think there are both women and men who are both for and against me. I think that goes either way, adds Giske. – Do you think Norwegian society is suitable for you? – I think Norwegian society needs a revitalization of politics in general, he finally answers. The Giske case Trond Giske resigned as deputy leader of the Labor Party in January 2018 in the wake of reports of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour. The Labor Party concluded that Giske had broken the party’s internal guidelines against sexual harassment. Giske has apologized for his behavior in several of the cases, but dismissed other warnings, and stated that the party’s conclusion that he had broken the guidelines against sexual harassment should be overturned. The Labor leadership stated in February 2019 that the party’s conclusion is firm, but that today there is nothing that stands in the way of Giske’s “full participation in the party”. When Trondheim Ap proposed in February 2019 to take Giske into the county team’s management, it triggered a lot of debate. After VG’s mention of a video in which Giske dances with a young woman in a nightclub in February 2019, the election committee chose to remove Giske. VG has apologized for the case, and was subsequently criticized by the Press’ Professional Committee for its coverage of the video recording from Bar Vulkan. Big internal disagreement On Thursday evening, Trondheim Ap was to choose a list of its top five candidates for the Storting. They must also have a list of a total of 20 candidates. But there has been great disagreement in Trondheim Ap about who are the right, and most unifying, candidates for the party. On one side are those who want Giske in the Storting. On the other side, they want Karianne Tung, Per Olav Skurdal Hopsø and Sara Shafighi to join the parliament. But both Tung and Hopsø were scrapped in favor of Giske and Kirsti Leirtrø, respectively. Because in addition to choosing Trond Giske at the top of the list, Trondheim Ap has now chosen that Kirsti Leirtrø will be in 2nd place. Photo: William Jobling / news In 3rd place, they have chosen that it should be a professional candidate. This means that Trondheim Ap wants the nomination committee in Trøndelag Labor Party to find a professional candidate to fill this place. Isak Busch from Røros was elected in 4th place and in 5th place Trondheim Ap chose that there should be a candidate from AUF. When it was finished, several of the members stormed out of the meeting and did not want to comment on what they have now decided to the press. Throw the press in the hallway When both the members and the press corps met at People’s House, it became clear that the leader of Trondheim Ap, Pål Sture Nilsen, wanted to close the meeting to the press. – There is very little space in the meeting room. There is barely enough room for the members. But the proposal made several people react. In the hall there was shouting and great displeasure. – We must have open processes. I would like to encourage that we do not close the meeting. It’s always good to be open, says Trude Basso. Jørn Arve Flått also believes that the press must be present during the discussions at the meeting. – It is a bad idea to close the meeting. Especially in a party that stands for openness and open processes, says Flått. Jørn Arve Flått and Trude Basso were very critical of the press being thrown out into the hallway during the meeting. Photo: Bjarte M. Johannesen / news And the fact that the press was thrown into the hallway, but without the door to the meeting being closed. 86 voted to throw out the press, while 85 wanted the press present. 3 people abstained from voting. Nilsen argued that the press had to be released so that the members would dare to speak freely on the rostrum. – The second thing that is important to me is that having the media present will limit their opportunities to freely say what they think from the pulpit. In addition to the leader wanting to close the meeting, large parts of Nidaros, Giske’s local team, also voted to throw out the press. Even Trond Giske abstained from voting. Trond Giske voted neither for nor against throwing the press in the hallway. Photo: Bjarte Johannesen / news Critical of the processes in the party Both during this meeting and in connection with the annual meeting in Trondheim Ap in February this year, several of the members have been critical of the internal processes in the party. – I have a comment about what I believe to be missing case papers. They arrived very late, which meant that I didn’t get a proper advance notice. That’s what Anne Sophie Hunstad said from the podium. Even after the press had to go to the corridor, discussions about the processes within the party continued. – There is no doubt that the Labor Party, which recently adopted a vision of being a unified party, is not a unified party in Trondheim. Political editor of Adresseavisen, Siv Sandvik, told news ahead of the meeting. At the annual meeting of Trondheim Ap in February, internal conflicts and personal disputes came to the fore. And after the meeting, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr asked Støre Trondheim Ap to put an end to the row. And the turmoil within the party has not been explained – The run-up to this meeting shows that Trondheim Ap is not a united party. The divisions we saw during the upsetting annual meeting in February are still rifts in the party. Published 15.08.2024, at 17.04 Updated 15.08.2024, at 23.54
