23 April 2023 at 17:38 Norwegian diplomats evacuated from Sudan – Foreign Ministry urges Norwegians to get out of the country The three Norwegian diplomats in Sudan have been transported out of the country. This is stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. – I am happy and relieved that our three Norwegian diplomats are now safe after being caught in the fighting in Khartoum for a week, says Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt in a press release. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes that it has been risky, but necessary to get the diplomats out. – Those who have now been evacuated have been through great stress. We therefore want to protect them in the time to come and ask that everyone respects that they will need peace and rest, says Huitfeldt. The embassy is now temporarily closed, but the foreign service is now fully focused on assisting Norwegian citizens who want to leave Sudan. According to the Foreign Ministry, around 80 Norwegian citizens are registered in Sudan. They write that it is risky to move around the country now and that all Norwegian citizens must make their own security assessments before choosing to move. Due to the serious and unpredictable security situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs now advises against all travel to Sudan and encourages Norwegian citizens to leave the country. Bloody battles broke out last weekend between government forces and the paramilitary group RFS. The fighting continues, despite an agreement on a ceasefire on 18 April. Sudan has been characterized by major protests after military coup plotters took power in the country in 2021.
