Norway fell in the human rights court after suicide in Oslo prison – Greater Oslo

The Norwegian authorities have been sued in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). In March 2020, a man who was in custody in Oslo prison took his own life. In 2019, the man was sentenced to compulsory mental health care after an attempted murder with a knife and other criminal matters and placed in an institution. There, six months later, he took the life of another patient. Because of this, he was transferred from an institution to a remand prison in Oslo. A few weeks after the transfer, the man committed suicide. In the judgment, the ECtHR writes that the Norwegian authorities knew that the man was mentally ill, but had insufficient follow-up of him when he was transferred from hospital to Oslo prison. Norway has thus violated Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
