Norway has entered into an agreement with the US authorities to buy new anti-aircraft missiles for over NOK 4 billion. This is among the largest single acquisitions of weapons that the Norwegian Armed Forces have ever made, says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp). – This is a significant acquisition that contributes to Norway’s security. With more and newer missiles, the Norwegian Armed Forces will have a better ability to protect Norway against air attacks, he says. The missiles being purchased have the designation AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM. They are primarily intended for the ground-based air defense system, but will also be able to be included in the arsenal of the F-35A fighter jets. AMRAAM is short for Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile. The Norwegian Armed Forces already have an agreement with Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace to purchase new NASAMS air defense systems. – Now we ensure that the air defense also gets more and modern ammunition, says director Gro Jære in Defense Materials.
