– As we now assess the prospects, the key interest rate will probably be kept at the current level for quite some time to come, says central bank governor Ida Wolden Bache in the press release on Thursday morning. The strong weakening of the krone over the summer has led to tension around the decision – and whether Norges Bank would suddenly be able to raise interest rates. Nevertheless, a majority of economists expected interest rates to remain unchanged. At the same time, price growth in June and July was lower than what Norges Bank had envisaged. Norges Bank’s aim is to bring price inflation down to around 2 per cent annually, and they use the interest rate to achieve this. In recent years, price inflation has been much higher – which has led to the interest rate being raised 14 times since autumn 2021. In July, core inflation, which is Norges Bank’s most important target for annual price growth, was 3.3 per cent. Published 15.08.2024, at 10.00 Updated 15.08.2024, at 10.03
