Nordmøre Fiskebåt arranges summer jobs as a fisherman for young people on Averøy – news Møre og Romsdal – Local news, TV and radio

Just over 07.00, the shark arrives at the fish reception. The boys climb ashore after twelve hours at sea. They have witnessed both sunset and sunrise. – It is a different job, compared to what one can get otherwise. Not many people have this as a summer job. I must say we are lucky, says Harald Hasle Sæter. Nordmøre fishing boat in Averøy is behind the pilot project, which aims to recruit more young people to the fishing profession. For three weeks, Harald Hasle Sæter, Magnus Bogen Ramstad and John Einar Åstasund Ramsøy get to try out life as fishermen. Tenant in Nordmøre fishing boat, Renate Kalvø Gustad, says it is important for them that establishing themselves as fishermen becomes easier. – It is not for everyone today, to start as a fisherman. Usually a young person must have bought a boat. At the same time, they had to feel safe being at sea, they must know where the fishing grounds are, and know how to deliver the fish, says Kalvø Gustad. Now they get to test it out with other young people, without having to get the equipment themselves. On this boat, the three boys fish together with skipper Ann Heidi Gjøsund. It’s a bit crowded in the wheelhouse, they admit. Here you can fish from June to August, and earn up to 50,000 kroner. But signing up for such a fishing scheme still requires some knowledge. In addition, you must have a vessel to travel with, and you must have equipment to fish with. She says you need some prior knowledge to sign up there, which they now offer young people. – Now we want to fill up the backpack for the young people, so that they have good enough ballast to later invest in themselves. It will be fun to see if they can try themselves as youth fishermen in their own boat, says Kalvø Gustad in Nordmøre fishing boat. – Fantastic opportunity Karl Anton Lorgen in the Directorate of Fisheries confirms that they do not have a particularly large demand for the Youth Fishing Scheme. Today, there are about 35 registered in Central Norway, which includes Møre og Romsdal and Trøndelag. – For those who do not have a family who are fishermen, and do not have any knowledge of the industry, this is a unique gateway, says Karl Anton Lorgen in the Directorate of Fisheries. Photo: Remi Sagen / news – I think young people need someone to take the initiative. If they get a plan that parents can deliver to, it will be much easier than having to have your own boat, and a reception to deliver to, says Lorgen. Bent Lie Jacobsen helped start the Youth Fishermen’s Association two years ago, to promote young people’s interests in the profession. He says the most important thing is to get the opportunity to try. – This is fantastic. It gives young people a chance to try the profession, to see if it is something for them. Bent Lie Jacobsen will start in 2020 Ungdommens fiskarlag. He thinks it is difficult for young people to get into the profession on their own. Photo: private He also adds that it is a challenge for young inexperienced people to start as coastal fishermen, without using up their savings. – It is too expensive for many young people to go fishing. Eggs cost 500 kroner. And fuel prices have skyrocketed. In addition, there are expensive vessels and expensive quotas. Meirsmak på fisk Despite the fact that the catch has not been great in the beginning of the summer job, the three young fishermen are satisfied with the experience they have. And they have no doubt that they will continue to fish, in one way or another. – I have plans to get on a boat, yes, says Hasle Sæter. But first they are going home to sleep.
