– I have two favorite players. Cristiano Ronaldo and Vinícius Júnior, tell 7-year-old Emilian Stenberg Skogestad. We don’t know yet whether Emilian is a great athletics talent, but football is what he is most interested in now. – Could you imagine doing athletics? – What do you mean? What is it? – Don’t you know what it is? – No, says Emilian honestly, and laughs. In a few weeks, he and the other kids at Moi will still be able to try their hand at shot put, long jump, hurdles and 100 metres. Emilian Stenberg Skogestad is mostly concerned with football. Because today the club cannot boast of a single athlete. Million investment The athletics facility in Moi has material of the very highest quality according to standards from the IAAF. It has four running lanes. An area for long jump. An area for bullet noise. The club’s almost 400 members will benefit from all this. The tartan deck has been laid on the new Moi stadium. It includes the restoration of the old football pitch and a brand new athletics facility, with floodlighting. – We have to have that too, you know. We must have light, says chairman Vidar Holum of Moi IL. In the Norwegian Athletics Association, they are happy that Moi is investing. – Moi is one of the smaller towns to build an athletics facility. The hope is that this will be an inspiration and give many opportunities to try athletics, says technical consultant Ole Petter Sandvig. And nothing has been spared in the construction of the new facility for the village’s roughly 2,000 residents. Bullet noise is also planned at the stadium. Photo: Erik Waage / news Club manager Bringedal is not worried that the club still does not have a single athlete to jump across the tartan deck. – As of now, it is not, Bringedal underlines. – In any case, it should not be written about the track conditions. Because they are almost perfect, if you ask me, he adds. Enthusiasts and voluntary work The facility is being built with the help of hard work, and not least a business community with a generous sponsorship budget. The municipality has also contributed. – This is teamwork, says Bringedal. The mayor of Lund, who reports a 60 meter record of 9.6, says they are creating something bigger than themselves. Photo: Erik Waage / news The mayor of Lund, Gro Helleland, is convinced that the athletics facility will be a huge success after a while. When asked if other mayors might look down on the investment in Lund with a little envy, she answers flatly: – They just have to be. Published 06.07.2024, at 17.35
