On Tuesday evening, Norwegian time, the American major newspaper has published a comprehensive article in which they write that Chess.com has gone through several thousand games by Hans Niemann. The 72-page report states that the 19-year-old American probably received illegal assistance in more than 100 online games, even as recently as 2020. This also applies to games in tournaments where there has been prize money in the pot. Niemann has previously denied that he has cheated, but has also admitted that he was banned from Chess.com after cheating twice at the age of 12 and 16. Chess expert Tarjei Svensen points out to news that he has not had time to read the report, but he has confidence in the website’s analyses. – They have obviously spent a long time on this and have probably made sure they have enough evidence, says Svensen. news has been in contact with Magnus Carlsen’s manager, Henrik Carlsen. He says that the world number one is not available for a comment as he is playing in the European Cup for a team in Austria. This is the cheating case: on 5 September, Magnus Carlsen abruptly withdrew from the major tournament Sinquefield Cup after he suffered a surprising loss against Niemann. Afterwards, Carlsen published a Twitter message, which several have interpreted as an accusation of cheating against the American. On 7 September, Niemann hit back and claimed he had not cheated on Carlsen. However, the 19-year-old admitted that he had cheated on two occasions online – as a 12- and 16-year-old. On 19 September, the two players met for the first time after the Sinquefield Cup. However, the game lasted only a few seconds because Carlsen retired after only one move. On 21 September, the renowned professor Ken Regan appeared on news and concluded that “everything was normal” with Niemann’s parties. He had analyzed over 300 of Niemann’s games over the past two years. A few days later, chess profiler Yosha Iglesias published another analysis, which stated that the American has played several “suspicious” games. On 26 September, Carlsen spoke for the first time about the row and said that he thinks Niemann has cheated more than he has publicly admitted. On 29 September, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) confirmed that they had started an investigation into both Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann. Both risk punishment. Accused Niemann of cheating Without once mentioning the word “cheating”, Magnus Carlsen put chess cheating on the agenda when he withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup with a cryptic Twitter message in early September. Since then, the case has developed from week to week and grown bigger and bigger. The climax came when Carlsen finally took the magazine out of his mouth and made strong accusations against the American Niemann. WORLD SENSORS: Magnus Carlsen. I want to continue playing chess at the highest level in the best competitions, Carlsen wrote in a post on Twitter and continued: – I think that Niemann has cheated more – and more recently – than he has publicly admitted, writes the Norwegian. Shortly after the 31-year-old “spoke out”, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) confirmed that it would start an investigation into both Carlsen and Niemann.
