In the documentary “Se Acabó” (“It’s over”), Spanish national team players tell about how they think they have been opposed for several years. Several of the debts are linked to the former national team coach Ignacio Quereda. – He treated us as if we were his little girls, says former national team goalkeeper Lola Gallardo in the Netflix documentary. The players say Quereda pinched their cheeks and stomachs, hugged them, and that he made both homophobic and vulgar comments. “What you need is a real cock,” they claim he said. Spain had beaten England 1-0, but it was not the sporting feat which came into focus. The video of the Spanish football president Luis Rubiales kissing national team star Jenni Hermoso became for many the image that is linked to the championship. Now Hermoso and several of the biggest Spanish stars are talking about the extensive oppression they believe they have been subjected to for years. – A confirmation of which arrow the Spanish football association has treated the women’s national team, says TV 2’s sports commentator Mina Finstad Berg to news. Draw 12 players The players speak out in the Netflix documentary “Sjå Abacó” (“It’s over”). Among other things, former national team manager Ignacio Quereda gets to go through. Quereda managed the Spanish women’s national team for a full 27 years, before he had to step down after a disappointing World Cup exit in 2015. The dismissal occurred after a collective criticism from all Spain’s World Cup players, but the details of the criticism did not emerge at the time. In addition to his alleged vulgar comments and pinching, the players also criticize Quereda’s footballing knowledge. – What I remember best is the tactics meeting with the boards, where he drew up twelve players and not eleven, says former national team captain Verónica Boquete. – A heated argument When Quereda had to give up the national team job in 2015, the significantly younger Jorge Vilda was appointed as the new national team manager. He too had a controversial leadership style. The Spanish players describe it as a regime of control. – It was well known that he went from room to room in the evenings, because he thought it was a good time to talk, says Irene Paredes. By then the players could have already gone to bed. The players, he says, also check what they had in their shopping bags. Photo: Manu Fernandez / AP The biggest criticism against Vilda was nevertheless directed at the sports doctor. The players believe he had no clear plan for how they should play, and chose to tell football president Rubiales. He must not have liked the criticism of the coach. – Rubiales is a hothead. He took it as a personal attack, says national team player Alexia Putellas. AVFEIA: Alexia Putellas thinks Rubiales did not take the coach’s criticism seriously. Photo: ROMAIN PERROCHEAU / AFP Golden Ball winner is critical The national team players tell of a growing dissatisfaction with football president Rubiales. They think he went to great lengths for the male players, while he didn’t care about the women. – It felt as if the association only had a women’s team because they had to. They neither believed in us nor cared, says Gullballen winner Aitana Bonmatí. Ahead of the World Cup in 2023, 15 players withdrew from the national team in protest, citing “mental health” as the reason. Some, among them Bonmatí, still chose to join the championship. Others, like Barcelona star Mapi León, failed. PROTESTED: Aitana Bonmatí was among 15 players who protested ahead of the WC. Photo: JOSEP LAGO / AFP – Saw me over my shoulder The well-known World Cup kiss in 2023 brought the conflict to a climax. The incident triggered a full crisis in the Spanish Football Association. Rubiales claimed the kiss happened “spontaneously, mutually and with consent”, which Hermoso denied. The Norwegian Football Association was among those who gave their support to Jenni Hermoso and the Spanish soccer women. In the documentary, Hermoso talks about how she experienced being pressured by the union to dismiss the situation afterwards. She claims she also received threats. – It got to a point where I went and looked over my shoulder. I was scared, says Hemoso. Increasing pressure from several quarters nevertheless meant that Rubiales eventually had to withdraw. National team manager Jorge Vilda also had to leave his job after the WC. In February, the trial starts where Rubiales is accused of sexual assault. – It’s so inappropriate Sports commentator Mina Finstad Berg in TV 2 believes the documentary shows how strongly the Spanish players have been affected by the treatment from the association. CHARACTER ASSASSINATION: Mina Finstad Berg calls the documentary a character assassination of former football president Luis Rubiales. Photo: TV 2 Øyvind Ganesh Eknes / TV 2 – There is something about having it told in this way, with so many details and such a large scope, says Berg to news. – I think it is very brave of the players to talk so openly about what they have experienced, but also about disagreements within the squad. She also highlights the way the union, according to the documentary, tried to pressure Hermoso after the kiss, which is hard to see. – It is so inappropriate that a union acts in that way, she says. Necessary states The agreement that was made in the Spanish Football Association after the World Cup kiss, Berg believes was necessary. – It is very strong to see how deep this is in the structure of Spanish football, and how much it has affected several of our greatest female football players, she says. The fact that they entered the WC as a split team, she believes, makes the WC gold a greater achievement. – They win despite, and not because of, their own association and their own national team management. Berg believes that there has been an improvement for the Spanish soccer women in the last year. – My impression is that there has been an improvement and that Spanish women’s football came out of this settlement strengthened. This does not mean that one is completely on target. news has sent the debts in this case to the Spanish Football Association, without receiving a reply. The director behind the documentary, Joanna Pardos, says to Spanish El Mundo that they have given the debtors the opportunity to speak in the documentary, but that they have refused.
