Many Norwegians drive around in new cars that brake automatically when the foot lets off the gas. The brake pedal is therefore rarely used, which has consequences. – There are a lot of rusty brake discs at the moment because people actually brake too little, says Arvid Jensen. A big problem Rust on brake discs is a big problem on electric cars, and one of the most frequent errors on EU inspections, according to NAF. Kenneth Rekvik, who is the general manager at the Mekonomen car workshop in Skien, constantly sees this problem. He checked news’s car. It is two years old and has only traveled 32,000 kilometers. Nevertheless, there is approaching more than 50 percent rust on the brake discs. That is the maximum limit for how much rust there can be on the brake discs at the EU inspection. – Here, some serious braking is needed to get it away, says Rekvik. To remove the surface rust, Rekvik recommends driving at high speed on the motorway and braking hard on the exit. Photo: Roald Marker / news The news car is not the worst example he has seen, but he does not recommend driving with brakes that are rusty. Then the car has a reduced braking effect. Powerful emergency brake To get rid of surface rust on the brake discs, the professionals recommend applying a powerful emergency brake once in a while. – Then it is important to take a good look in the rear-view mirror first and make sure that there are no cars behind you, says Jensen. The pictures below show examples of how it should and shouldn’t look: No rust on Arild Jensen’s brake discs. This is how it should look. This is not how it should look. Almost more than 50 percent rust on the brake discs. More use of the brakes also means that other parts of the braking system are better kept the same, according to NAF. – Some may be afraid of damaging something when you brake hard with the car. Rather, it’s the other way around, says Nils Sødal, communications advisor at NAF. By braking hard regularly, you ensure that the brakes are always able to perform at their maximum. – Take care of the rust both to get through the EU inspection and to avoid unnecessary and premature replacement of the brake discs on your car.
