The accident occurred in international waters off the coast of the Peloponnese peninsula. A major rescue operation was launched, but strong winds make the rescue work difficult. 104 people were pulled from the sea alive, but it is unclear how many people were on board the boat when it sank. Four of those who were rescued were taken to hospital. The boat had set out from Turkey and was on its way to Italy. The Greek coast guard says they already received messages on Tuesday evening that the boat could be in distress at sea, but that the migrants on board refused when they were offered help. The accident is the deadliest involving a migrant boat outside Greece so far this year, according to Greek authorities. (NTB)
