National tests: A clear decline in the arithmetic skills of the eighth graders

The eighth graders’ achievements in arithmetic are down for the second year in a row, writes NTB. – This year’s cohort of pupils in the 8th grade performs two scale points lower than the 2022 cohort in arithmetic. In reading, the students perform on a par with last year’s cohort, which is just over one scale point lower than in 2022, writes the Norwegian Directorate of Education in its summary of the national tests. The boys do slightly better in arithmetic than the girls, while the opposite is true in reading. In English they perform evenly. 94 per cent of the pupils in the 8th grade took part in the tests. The fifth graders do worse in reading and arithmetic than last year.
