The constituency became vacant after Conservative Nigel Adams announced in May that he was resigning from parliament. He is known as one of Boris Johnson’s supporters. Labour’s Keir Mather received 16,456 votes, while Conservative candidate Claire Holmes received 12,298. The Liberal candidate received 1,188 votes. When the Conservatives won last time, they did so by a margin of over 20,000 votes. Labour’s victory is the biggest swing from one election to another in the constituency ever, according to the BBC. At 25, Keir Mather becomes the youngest representative in the British House of Commons.
