This will be revealed in a press conference with the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday evening. The DR Congo in particular is hard hit. According to the WHO, there have been around 14,000 reported cases so far this year, and over 500 deaths. African infection control authorities (Africa CDC) have registered 38,000 cases and 1,456 deaths as of 4 August, NTB wrote on Tuesday. Cases of infection have also been reported in Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Kenya and the Central African Republic, according to FHI. They further write that so far there have been no reports that infection from the DR Congo has spread to Europe. The WHO also declared the mpox outbreaks an international public health emergency in the summer of 2022. The declaration was lifted in May 2023, after a significant decrease in the number of cases. Mpox was formerly called monkeypox. It is a contagious viral disease related to smallpox. The disease is rare in Europe and is rarely fatal.
