– You often think that it is only paintings, but I feel that it is much more, says Emilie Andreassen (17). She is at the National Museum with her class from Edvard Munch upper secondary school. They have noticed that more people their age are interested in museum art. – I see that a lot of people draw on TikTok, so I think a lot of people get inspiration on different platforms, says Elias Hukkelberg (18). I like to spend time at various exhibitions. It happens occasionally. No, art is not for me. Show result Increase in visitors Several museums in the country notice an increase in young people’s interest in art, and see that visitor numbers are increasing. So far this year, 24 per cent of visitors to the National Museum have been under the age of 25. This is an increase from last year, when the figure was 16 per cent. – We certainly notice a great interest in events, communication and exhibitions, says director Ingrid Røynesdal. She believes part of the reason for the increase is that art is more accessible. – You can go to a museum when you want and go with friends when you want. It can be used as a meeting place for experiences, and I think most people are looking for that today. Director of the National Museum, Ingrid Røynesdal, believes that art is more accessible to young people. Now a lot of young people come to our openings and theme evenings, says communication manager at Kode, Siri Breistein. Breistein believes that the cultural school bag and social media have been important contributors to the increase. – It is not always how beautiful the art is or how it looks that is important, but the feeling it gives you, says Matilda Sandberg (18). They believe that sharing art on social media contributes to more young people going to museums. On TikTok, it’s easy to tap into a stream of videos of people showcasing their art and sharing their work process. The museums have also spent a lot of money on promotion through social media in recent years. Elias Hukkelberg (18) says he gets many videos of art on his social media. I am very interested in many forms of art, such as drawing, singing, cartoons and lots of other things, says Amalia Fuentes (18). – Want to reach out to those who think museums are scary. The museums in this country work especially for young people. Rapper Arif will have an exhibition at Munch until December. He is happy that the museums are seeing an increasing interest. – I want to reach out to those who think museums are scary. I thought so when I was young, and I expect that many people think the same, says Arif and adds: – Maybe what we do here can help bring in those kids. – I was very happy to hear that more people are interested in art, says rapper Arif. He also believes that social media plays a major role in increasing interest in art among young people. – It doesn’t take long to learn something about an artist on TikTok if you are actually a little interested or curious. The fact that art is more accessible, I think, has a lot to say, says the artist. In a stand in his exhibition at Munch, visitors can follow the rapper’s creative processes. Photo: Kai Rune Kvitstein / news – It is important that those around me experience art At the National Museum, the third graders think it is good that more people their age are exposed to art. – I think there are much greater opportunities today to become interested in art. There are several lines and opportunities that make it easier to gain knowledge, says Erle Andresen. Amalie Fuentes believes that art is a big part of finding oneself. – For me, it is important that those around me experience art, because art is important to me. Those who are young like me are beginning to find themselves. Then art is quite a big part, I feel, says Fuentes. Published 15.09.2024, at 21.00
