More hospitalized covid patients – could be waves of more viruses this winter – news Norway – Overview of news from different parts of the country

The increase in infections of covid-19 seems to have slowed somewhat in the last week, while the number of new corona admissions has increased. This is shown by the Institute of Public Health (FHI) in its latest weekly report on covid-19, influenza and other respiratory diseases. FHI believes it is likely that, in addition to a wave of covid-19, we will also have epidemics of influenza, RSV infection, and perhaps also whooping cough and Mycplasma pneumoniae infections this winter. – The burden on the health service has begun and may be prolonged if waves and epidemics follow one another. Simultaneous waves or epidemics can cause a heavy burden, especially between mid-December and mid-January, says Trygve Ottersen in FHI. Worried about a greater total load – We have had several weeks with an increase in the number of covid admissions, says Anne Maagaard, head of department at the infectious diseases department at Oslo University Hospital (OUS) to news. Oslo University Hospital now has 23 inpatients with covid as the main reason for admission, according to special advisor Ivar Greiner at OUS. Maagaard explains that it is now the season for respiratory diseases, and that it is therefore a challenge when covid-19 comes to the fore. – We have not seen so much influenza yet, but we expect an increase. The most worrying thing is that mycoplasma pneumonia is increasing, and then the total burden on us could be even greater, says the head of department. FHI asks hospitals and municipalities to be prepared for more admissions with covid-19. Most of the elderly among those admitted – The most common patients who are admitted now are elderly people. They don’t get very ill, but they can’t cope at home and need increased care and perhaps oxygen, says Maagaard. Pregnant women infected with corona are also among those admitted. – Yes, we have had some pregnant women. If you are heavily pregnant, you may be more affected by having a fever and feeling short of breath. This applies to all infections, and not just covid-19, she points out. MORE ADMISSIONS: The head of the infectious disease department at Oslo University Hospital confirms an increase in the number of corona admissions in recent weeks. Doubling in corona-related deaths The number of new admissions to the intensive care unit with covid-19 is still at a low level, but has increased in the last week. The number of new admissions was 22 in week 47 and 12 in week 46. Last week, FHI reported a doubling in corona-related deaths in recent weeks. In week 44 there were 31 corona-related deaths, while in week 46 there were 73 corona-related deaths. For the last week, 69 covid-19-associated deaths have been registered. Influenza outbreaks may occur before Christmas FHI encourages the elderly, people in risk groups and healthcare personnel to get vaccinated. Vaccination against both influenza and covid-19 for people in recommended groups is the most important measure to reduce serious illness and death, writes FHI. SOMEONE SHOULD TEST THEMSELVES: FHI asks people in risk groups who may become seriously ill from a corona infection to consider taking a corona test if they have symptoms. Photo: Erik Johansen / NTB The authorities no longer give a general recommendation that people must be tested for corona. People in certain risk groups are recommended to self-test if they suspect corona. According to FHI, the flu outbreak is currently not underway, but the incidence is gradually increasing and FHI believes there may be a flu outbreak before Christmas.
