We have asked this question to representatives of those who sell the most cars in Norway. 1. Are all car models supplied with an alarm 2. Will these alarms be triggered on ferries? 3. Is it easy to turn it off, or do people have to read the instruction manual to understand this? 4. Why do they think people can’t turn off the alarm? 5. Can car dealers get better at showing customers, especially in Western Norway, how to turn off the alarm? Lars Joakim Hansen, communications manager Møller bil (VW, Skoda and Audi): 1. Yes, many of our models have an alarm to reduce the possibility of vandalism and theft. A typical example is that the car moves when it is locked, or that there is movement inside the compartment when the car is not in use. 2. I have heard several times that the alarm can go off when the sea is rough. It is therefore also possible to switch off the alarm system when you are standing still on the ferry. 3. Yes, this can be done easily. There are different ways to do it, depending on the model. On our electric ID models, you do this via the touch screen in the car. On other models with an alarm, there will be a switch or button on the driver’s side of the car that can deactivate the alarm. 4. It’s probably easy to forget in a busy weekday, or that many people don’t actually think about the alarm going off. 5. Our customers must get a good overview of their car’s software when they pick it up from the dealer. If all retailers talk about this function, I do not have a detailed overview. I think everyone, both retailers and ferry crew, could be better at reminding motorists that the alarm can go off on the ferry, and that it might be a good idea to turn it off. Erik Trosby, communications manager Volvo Cars: 1. Yes, all new models from Volvo come with an alarm as standard. 2. It is possible to set the alarm to a reduced alarm level before driving on board a ferry. This disconnects the sensors that register movement, and the alarm will not go off. If you don’t do this, the alarm can start. 3. The function for reduced alarm level is easily accessible in the car’s center display. If you do not know about this, you can read in the instruction manual. 4. It is only speculation, but it may be that there are few who know that this is possible to do. On Volvos, it is easy to turn it off. 5. Gaining experience is that Volvo dealers have a good knowledge of the functionality of our cars and that they are good at showing the customers. Øyvind Knudsen, product and PR manager Hyundai Motor Norway: 1. Yes, alarm is standard equipment 2. We are not aware of this being a problem. There have been no reported customer complaints about this. 3. No, you cannot deactivate the car alarm, and it is not intended that you should do this. Some of our cars have a rear seat warning, to prevent people from forgetting animals or children in the car. Some models have an ultrasonic sensor that can be triggered by movement, and in theory the combination of large waves and loose objects could trigger an alarm. But this system can be easily deactivated. (Also refers to answer 3 to answer questions 4 and 5) Marius Tegneby, Director of Communications BMW Group Norway: 1. Yes. This became standard on BMWs produced from summer 2016 for the Norwegian market. There are also some different functions on the alarms, regardless of car model and year. 2. Both yes and no. Yes, if the owner has not deactivated the motion sensors. Vibrations and movements from the ferry will then trigger the alarm. No, if this sensor is disabled. 3. It is easy to disable this feature. Depending on the car model/equipment level, you do this by: Pressing the lock button on the key twice (within 10 seconds) – instead of pressing once. (You can get a light signal in the alarm lamp on the inside mirror) You can deactivate the alarm in the car’s infotainment system. If you are connected to a smartphone, you will receive a notification if the alarm goes off. 4. It is probably primarily about old habit, or dishabituation. 5. We must aim for a good and informative delivery of new and used cars, but it is not always the case that people buy cars from dealers, eg private purchases. I would always encourage people to read the instruction manual. Anne Sønsteby, information director Ford Motor Norway: 1. The type of alarm system depends entirely on the model variant and equipment level. Some of our cars have a shell protection alarm, while others have both a shell protection, motion sensors and a tilt sensor. The tilt sensor’s function is designed to warn when the car is at an unnatural angle, such as tire theft when using a jack, or that the car is towed. 2. An alarm system with a tilt sensor can potentially trigger an alarm on the ferry. This is because the car is not level when the sea is rough. 3. You can switch off the sensor in the car’s own menu. On our Mustang Mach-E electric car, you can also ask the car to ask you to turn off the alarm after each driving cycle. 4. Our dealers generally spend a lot of time handing over new cars to customers. New cars are very advanced with completely new technologies, and there is a lot to get used to. The alarm system is one of many technologies that I go over with the customers, and there is a lot that customers should learn about their new car. (Also answer to question 5) Tesla no longer has its own press spokesperson in Norway. They are the best-selling car brand so far this year.
