The police confirmed this on Friday afternoon. Strid disappeared from his home in Meråker on 17 December 2022. The remains were found on Sunday evening. It was a farmer who was out herding sheep who found his remains in a forest clearing 3.2 kilometers from where Strid lived. – The discovery site and the remains have so far not provided any concrete proof that something criminal has happened, says Øyvind Jørgensen, head of police investigation in Trøndelag police district. After the discovery on Sunday evening, the body was sent to St. Olav’s hospital for an autopsy and further examinations. It is the results of this that make the police certain that it is the man who has been missing in Meråker for a long time. – We are continuing to survey the area around the discovery site and we are searching for, among other things, the deceased’s mobile phone and other items he may have been wearing, says Jørgensen. – The focus going forward is to get answers to what is being analysed, to finish searching the area and to compare this with the rest of the investigation. Since no one other than Strid has been missing in the area, the next of kin were already notified on Sunday evening about the find. It was in January 2023 that the police announced that Strid was missing. But there are no sure signs that he was alive after 17 December 2022. After that, the mobile phone is not registered in use. – We understand that this case has left its mark on the local community and we are aware that there are many rumors about what may have happened to Gaute Strid, says Jørgensen. He emphasizes that the police have no reason to believe that anything criminal has happened. It has become easy in the areas around the home on several occasions.
