He was 91 years old, and died in hospital in Moscow on Tuesday 30 August. Gorbachev was the last leader of the Soviet Union. He is known, among other things, as the political leader who ended the Cold War, and who brought down the world’s largest communist empire. He was General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 to March 1990 and then as President of the Soviet Union from March 1990 to December 1991. On Christmas Day 1991, Gorbachev resigned as leader of the Soviet Union, a country that no longer existed. Gorbachev launched the concepts of perestroika and glasnost, renewal and openness. Gorbachev changed world history, but is less popular in Russia.
