Facts about the Congressional Review Committee In July 2021, the House of Representatives set up a committee of inquiry to investigate what led to the storming of the Congress building in Washington on January 6 of that year. The committee will try to determine the circumstances surrounding the storm and the role played by then-President Donald Trump and his staff. The committee has nine members and is chaired by civil rights activist and Democrat Bennie G. Thompson. Two Republicans are on the committee, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both of whom have been condemned by their own party for their participation. The committee has interviewed over 1,000 people and has reviewed over 125,000 documents and large amounts of video and audio recordings from the dramatic events that cost five people their lives. On June 9, the starting shot was fired for an open and televised hearing where many witnesses will explain themselves and the committee will present parts of its material. The hearing is expected to last until the end of July. The committee is scheduled to present its final report in September. Angry Trump supporters deny that Trump was not re-elected and climb on the building before later entering Congress last year. When Pence refused to give in to pressure from Trump, Trump incited the masses to take him. “Hang Mike Pence,” shouted several from the raging crowd as they stormed the building. They mistakenly thought that the election had been cheated. “Proud boys would have killed Pence if they had had the chance,” said Democrat Pete Aquilar, who sits on the committee. An informant from the right-wing radical group has told the FBI. Furthermore, Aquilar said that at one point the masses were only twelve meters from the Vice President. Greg Jacob was an adviser to then-Vice President Mike Pence. Together with the retired judge Michael Luttig, they took the oath before they explained themselves to the investigation committee on Thursday. Together with his closest colleagues, Pence followed the storming from an underground parking lot. The security forces asked the vice president and his staff to get into the cars. Most sat down, but again the vice president stood. He refused. Stayed there for 4.5 hours. During his time in the parking lot, Trump never called his vice president to find out if he was safe, according to the commission of inquiry. – How did Pence react to that? “He was frustrated,” one of Pence’s colleagues told the committee. Donald Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, told the president about the violence in the Congress building. Still, Trump tweeted that Vice President Pence did not have the “courage” to override the election result, White House staffers said in videos shown Thursday. The hearing is expected to last until July. The final report will be presented in September. Members of the right-wing radical group Proud Boys would have killed Pence if they had found him during the storming of Congress on January 6 last year, according to witnesses to the committee investigating the incident.
