The amount corresponds to approximately NOK 14 billion. Meta is the company that owns Facebook, and is led by Mark Zuckerberg. Meta says it will appeal the decision, and adds that the ruling will not affect Facebook in Europe, writes Reuters. It is the Irish data protection authority DPC that fines the technology giant. The reason is a violation of European privacy rules, according to Politico. The case has its roots in the revelations made by Edward Snowden about the US’s mass surveillance of telecommunications and data traffic. The revelations showed that the US authorities had obtained privacy information through technology companies such as Facebook and Google, writes NTB. It is not the first time that an American technology giant has been fined for violating European privacy rules. In 2021, Amazon had to pay a fine of 746 million dollars, equivalent to 8.1 billion kroner.
