On July 26, 2024 , the Spanish department store chain El Corte Inglés took a significant strategic turn in its executive leadership. The company’s shareholders’ meeting approved the appointment of Gastón Bottazzini , an Argentine national, as the new CEO. His ascension came just seven months after he joined El Corte Inglés as a personal advisor to Marta Álvarez , the company’s president, who placed immense trust in him. Bottazzini brought extensive experience from his time as CEO of Falabella , one of the largest department store groups in Latin America . He was tasked with formulating a new strategic plan aimed at investing 3 billion euros by 2030 , a plan whose launch was publicized in March.
However, in a surprising turn of events, El Corte Inglés recently announced Bottazzini’s departure and a complete reorganization of its executive tier, including the elimination of the CEO position. Effective immediately, Santiago Bau , the former corporate general director, has been appointed as the new general director, taking direct responsibility for all group businesses as well as the corporate and financial areas.
In addition, Rafael Díaz Yeregui , the current vice-secretary of the board, has been named as the new secretary general of El Corte Inglés, holding the title of general director. He will lead the legal advisory, sustainability, and human resources departments. Both Santiago Bau and Rafael Díaz Yeregui will report to the board’s monitoring committee, chaired by Marta Álvarez and including members Cristina Álvarez and José Ramón de Hoces .
Bottazzini’s exit, officially described by the company as occurring “by mutual agreement,” comes mere weeks before the crucial Black Friday and Christmas sales period, which is vital for El Corte Inglés, accounting for nearly half of its operating profit. The timing of this leadership change raises questions about the continuity and execution of the new strategic plan, which is now under the responsibility of Santiago Bau. The ambitious project aims to remodel stores, expand business operations , and enhance the group’s logistical and technological capabilities . In March, President Marta Álvarez stated, “Everything we do at El Corte Inglés is aimed at understanding, anticipating, and exceeding our clients’ expectations, providing them with unique experiences and real value: the service that sets us apart.”
These leadership changes come on the heels of a “very positive” year for the company, which concluded 2024 with revenues of 16.675 billion euros , representing a 2% increase over 2023, and a net profit of 512 million euros , marking a 6.7% improvement from the previous fiscal year. Such financial success places additional pressure on Santiago Bau to sustain these results amid a fast-evolving retail landscape and external challenges.
This isn’t the first instance of an executive shakeup stemming from internal tensions. Bottazzini’s arrival previously prompted the exit of José María Folache , who was the head of retail. Folache’s departure is seen as a watershed moment that altered the company’s strategic direction significantly. He was part of the executive committee, created specifically after Victor del Pozo , the previous CEO, was let go in March 2022. This committee was intended to oversee executive functions and ensure compliance with the board’s directives. With Folache’s exit, the committee lost its influence, and decision-making shifted directly to Bottazzini, who reported only to the board and the executive president.

The future direction for El Corte Inglés appears to be a balancing act. The strategic investments are aimed not only at survival but at thriving within an ever-changing retail environment characterized by increasing competition and the rise of e-commerce . As the leadership transition unfolds, both Santiago Bau and Rafael Díaz Yeregui will have to navigate these pressures effectively, while maintaining the company’s established core values of quality and customer service.
In conclusion, the upcoming weeks will be critical as El Corte Inglés embarks on this new chapter under the guidance of its restructured leadership team, particularly with the high-stakes holiday shopping season just around the corner. The resilience and adaptability demonstrated by the company in recent years will be put to the test, as it attempts to align its ambitious strategic goals with the immediate operational challenges it faces.
