The earthquake with an epicenter near the capital Jakarta was registered at 1pm local time on Monday. It was measured at a magnitude of 5.6, according to Indonesian authorities. So far, the hardest hit area seems to be between Jakarta and Bandung in West Java, around the city of Cianjur. There it is reported that one of the hospitals alone has received 20 deaths. At least 300 are injured and receiving treatment in hospital. Most of these are said to have broken bones after being crushed in collapsed buildings. That’s what the head of the governing authorities in the city, Herman Suherman, told the local TV station Metro TV. In total, at least 44 deaths are to be registered, reports the AFP news agency. In Jakarta, several high-rise buildings were reported to sway during the earthquake, but there have been no reports of serious damage there.
