Mandy Walker: A Groundbreaking Appointment in Cinematography

Oscar-nominated  Director of Photography  (DP)  Mandy Walker  has made history by being elected as the  48th president  of the  American Society of Cinematographers  (ASC). This prestigious appointment marks a significant milestone as she becomes the  first woman  to lead this century-old honorary society, which has been at the forefront of cinematographic excellence since its founding in  1919 .

In  2023 , Walker achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first woman to win the top  ASC Award  for cinematography in a feature film. Additionally, she is only the  third woman  ever to receive an  Academy Award  nomination for her outstanding work in Baz Luhrmann’s critically acclaimed film, “ Elvis .” Walker, who hails from  Australia , has built an impressive portfolio that includes collaborations with Luhrmann on projects like “ Australia ” and a diverse array of films such as “ Hidden Figures ,” “ The Mountain Between Us ,” “ Lantana ,” “ Tracks ,” “ Snow White ,” and “ Mulan .”

Walker expressed her gratitude upon assuming the presidency: “It is a great honor to be the president of the  ASC , and an even bigger privilege to be the  first woman  to hold the position. I am so humbled to take on the responsibility of representing a society that has carved out an  inspiring , inclusive space to meet and support other cinematographers. I am proud of our century-old legacy to advance the  art and science of cinematography , and I’m excited for the future of our organization.”

Her goals for the organization are ambitious. “I am intent on making sure our members have the  space to grow , the opportunities to  educate and learn  from one another, and the support of their fellow filmmakers to carve out the best career they can,” added Walker. “We will continue to lead efforts in raising awareness about the importance of  representation  behind the camera.”

Walker steps into the role following  Shelly Johnson , who has reached his term limit and warmly passed the baton to her. Johnson’s leadership has set high standards, and Walker aims to build upon this strong foundation.

In addition to Walker, several other board officers have been elected, including  vice presidents  Eric Steelberg, John Simmons, and Patrick Cady;  treasurer  Charles Minsky;  secretary  Dejan Georgevich; and  sergeant-at-arms  Charlie Lieberman. These appointments reflect a commitment to a collaborative leadership approach in advancing the organization’s mission.

The ASC Board, elected by the organization’s active membership, also features talents such as Natasha Braier, Alice Brooks, Russell Carpenter, Richard Crudo, Karl-Walter Lindenlaub, Tommy Maddox-Upshaw, Erik Messerschmidt, M. David Mullen, Cynthia Pusheck, and Amy Vincent. Additionally,  alternate board members  include Chris Chomyn, Ernest Dickerson, Polly Morgan, and Wally Pfister.

Beyond her achievements in feature films, Walker has also made her mark on the advertising industry. She collaborated with Luhrmann on the iconic  Chanel No. 5 campaign , featuring renowned actresses  Nicole Kidman  and  Gisele Bündchen . Her influence extends beyond borders as a member of the Australian  Cinematographer Society , and she has served as a governor for the  Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Walker’s accolades are numerous and impactful, including the  ACS Cinematographer of the Year Milli Award , multiple  Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards , and the prestigious  Order of Australia Medal . Her artistic vision and dedication to the craft have garnered her respect and admiration within the industry, making her an inspiration for aspiring cinematographers everywhere.

In conclusion, Mandy Walker’s election as the first female president of the  American Society of Cinematographers  represents a transformative moment for the organization and the broader film community. With her extensive experience, vision for inclusivity, and commitment to advancing the craft, Walker is poised to lead the ASC into a new era. Her leadership will undoubtedly resonate throughout the industry, forging paths for future generations of cinematographers and promoting a diverse and inclusive landscape in filmmaking.
