A large search was launched on Saturday evening when it was reported that a man had fallen overboard from a tanker. The main rescue center in southern Norway received a report about the incident at 9.30pm. – The man was last seen around 5 p.m. As a result, the search area became relatively large, says Asbjørn Viste, rescue manager in HRS Southern Norway. The ship had then sailed from the south-west tip of Frøya in Trøndelag and down to Hustadvika in Møre og Romsdal. It is uncertain when the man should have fallen overboard. Extensive search Both rescue boats and a rescue helicopter searched for the man for several hours. Other boats also took part in the search. – The ship that the man had been on also did a very good job. They reversed course and actively participated in the search, says Andreas Ingsøy, rescue manager at HRS. He said that the search was challenging. – It was demanding conditions and very long distances, but a thorough search was made for the man. At 01.30 on the night of Sunday, the search was terminated. – After conferring with the doctor, it was concluded that there was no longer any hope of finding the man alive, and the search was therefore ended, says Ingsøy. He further says that this was a joint assessment that they, the police and health personnel made. An extensive search was made for the man. Photo: Marinetraffic.com Asks people to keep an eye out Asbjørn Viste, rescue manager in HRS, asks people to keep an extra eye on the sea going forward. – Someone might find him floating in the sea in the next few days. Therefore, people should keep a little extra perspective during this period. The whole stretch, from the time he was last seen until it was discovered that he was gone, is relevant, he says. The man who fell overboard was a foreign citizen. The embassy in the country from which the man came has been notified of what has happened. It was VG who first reported that the man had fallen overboard.
