With gloved fingers, Malin Wiig (22) wipes the car hood with a cloth. The black lacquer is mirror-gloss. – I always get a little happy from a freshly washed car, laughs the Ålesund girl. And she really knows her stuff. As one of the first in the country, she has taken a diploma in car care and she got top marks. When the offer to take another vocational certificate came up, she took up the challenge. – I have wanted to continue with detailing, polishing and car care all my life. says the 22-year-old. Detailing is car care at a high level. Wiig has been interested in cars since he was a teenager and in his group of friends it is quite common to meet to clean the cars. Then there is rubbing, scrubbing and rubbing and preferably taking pictures afterwards. He believes that the status of the car maintenance profession will increase when it has now become its own education. – It has been an incredible development with new techniques and products, says Paulsen. Cleaning a car is not just about soap and water, but also about chemicals that meet strict HSE requirements. – Car care has become an important part of the activity in the car industry. The car dealership has been large and all the cars must be prepared by a car attendant, says Bjørn Nybø. He is the manager of the training office for automotive subjects in Sunnmøre. He also believes that it is important that there are competent people who carry out this. Car care is a lot about chemistry and different techniques with different tools. – It is a big subject and detailing has become a hobby for many young people, says Nybø. It’s the worst thing you can do, she thinks. – Rather take a little extra half an hour and go over the car by hand. Then you save a lot of money and work in the future, says the 22-year-old. The only thing you need at home is a wheel rim, a bucket of soapy water, a sponge and a garden hose to flush with, says Wiig. He himself has two BMWs. One is only for summer use and she built and painted it herself. The 22-year-old is proud of the new vocational certificate and is happy to accept dirty cars that she can look after. – I’m enjoying myself.
