4 August 2022 at 20:59 Vikings’ European success continues – fiery Tripic provided a party night in Stavanger A Viking on fire swept Sligo Rovers off the field and won 5-1 at home in the first game in the 3rd qualifying round for the conference league in football on Thursday evening. The European Cup fever in Stavanger continues unabated, and a magnificent Zlatko Tripic gave Viking a brilliant starting point before the return match in Ireland next week. The Siddis got a dream start to Thursday’s match when captain Tripic easily scored 1-0 on the return after a finish from Kevin Kabran. Minutes later, the hosts rolled up a beautiful attack which was finally rounded off with a rush from Samúel Fridjónsson after a great assist pass from Tripic. After the break, the hero from the 2nd qualifying round, Mai Traore, made it 3-0 for the Rogalanders after a lovely attack. This time too, Tripic was the second last Viking player on the ball. Perhaps the best attack of the match was served after an hour. A cheeky pass from Frijónsson found Niklas Sandberg on the right side of the pitch. The 27-year-old forced his way into the field before beautifully bending in the home team’s fourth. Five minutes before full time, 17-year-old Edvin Austbø scored 5-0 for Viking, thus giving the home crowd more to cheer for. However, the dream night got a shot in the arm when the away team reduced it to 5-1 with a penalty just before the end. The second leg between Viking and Sligo Rovers in the 3rd qualifying round for the conference league will be played in the Irish city of Sligo in one week. (NTB)
