Lundby hard against jumping legend – claims he would not support campaign – news Sport – Sports news, results and broadcast schedule

– They did not think we should jump there, because we are not good enough simply. It is hurtful to hear that, Lundby says to news. Recently, Maren Lundby and the rest of the world elite in women’s jumping could cheer for a victory that the Norwegian side has been fighting hard for for many years: From next season, the women will also be able to participate in rinsing competitions internationally. Not long ago, it was unthinkable. The proposal has in fact met with great opposition from several quarters. In an interview with news, Lundby claims that several jumping profiles did not want to contribute to gender equality in the sport. FIGHTED TOGETHER: Maren Lundby and national team manager Clas Brede Bråthen could cheer for the International Ski Federation’s (FIS) decision to let the women compete in ski flying earlier this year. Photo: Andreas Hagen / news – It is hurtful With Lundby in the lead, several jumpers contributed in a video campaign last year that demanded that women should be allowed to participate in ski flying competitions internationally. The hope was that more male athletes would also participate in the campaign. It should turn out not to be so easy. DISAPPOINTED: Maren Lundby. Photo: Stian Lysberg Solum / NTB – We found out that not many people wanted to support the case. It was really only Halvor Egner Granerud that we asked, who was our biggest profile here in Norway – the whole Norwegian national team supported it. Then we asked a number of foreigners, but it was not as easy there, says Lundby. Hoppesset reveals that she received a resounding no from some – who replied that they did not want to contribute. – They did not think we should jump there, because we are not good enough simply. It’s hurtful to hear that. – Who were these practitioners? – We had Gregor Schlierenzauer, who is the most winning jumper on the men’s side, who has now posted. He thought that we were simply not good enough, and that he would not support that case, she believes. – What do you think about that? – No, I think that’s bad. I was very disappointed with the attitude of our foreign friends. That might explain a little how it is in those nations. They have leaders who may say “the girls should at least not skip ski flying”. Schlierenzauer strikes back Schlierenzauer himself tells news that he has never said that women in general should not be allowed to participate in ski flying, but that it must happen at the right time, and when there is enough width at the top that there are enough people who are ready for the challenge. – I have always said that I really want to see women skiflying, but timing must be right. In my opinion, I think that there are 20 women who can both cope and enjoy the big slopes, and of course Maren is one of them, he writes in an e-mail to news. PROFILE: Gregor Schlierenzauer is one of the best ski jumpers of all time. The Austrian can, among other things, point to six World Cup golds and two overall victories in the World Cup. Photo: Kerstin Joensson / AP The Austrian emphasizes that he has great respect for Lundby, and that he is looking forward to seeing long and safe jumps in the coming season. – I really appreciate that the sport of jumping is growing, and especially on the women’s side, says Schlierenzauer, before he throws the ball back to Lundby: – She can call me at any time. Unable to understand Lundby says that she has not spoken to Schlierenzauer about the incident afterwards. The jumping legend’s home country, Austria, has also been one of the nations that has held back in the fight for women’s participation in cloud flying. Lundby understands little of this. STA: Lundby did not give up. Photo: Lise Åserud / NTB – I actually do not know. It’s kind of … No, I can ‘t understand that. If you look back at ski flying from the 80’s, they killed themselves in a way. No one questioned that. I’m not saying we killed ourselves either. The equipment is so much better and everything is much safer now. It feels like it’s because cloud flying is for men. That’s the toughest thing, and we can not take it away from them. It’s a bit like that. The 27-year-old says they were in contact with several big names in connection with the campaign. In addition to active profiles, they also made contact with other “legends” in the sport. More details can be found in the book about Lundby, which will be published on 18 August. It is written by Silje Bråthen.
