5 March 2024 at 15:40 Aston Villa reports billion-dollar deficit Aston Villa ran a huge deficit in the 2022/23 season. The Premier League club still claims it stays within the regulations. The accounts are based on figures up to 31 May 2023, i.e. at the end of last year’s season. The season was a great success for the Birmingham club, which finished in seventh place in the league and thus qualified for play in the European conference league. Everton and Nottingham Forest were recently dropped by the Premier League’s Financial Regulations (PSR). The regulations allow a deficit of 105 million pounds, equivalent to just over 1.4 billion Norwegian kroner, over a three-year period. Aston Villa’s deficit ended at 119 million pounds, equivalent to around 1.5 billion kroner. At the same time, much of Aston Villa’s expenditure has come in the form of infrastructure at the club, including in the women’s team and the junior academy. These can be deducted from the PSR figures. Everton recently had their all-time high points penalty of ten points reduced to six, but remain at risk of further sanctions later on. So does Nottingham Forest. (© NTB)
