Just a short week ago, Thomas Tuchel was fired by the new Chelsea owners. Now Todd Boehly is proposing yet another big change – this time for the entire league. The idea comes all the way from the United States. – Ultimately, I hope the Premier League learns a bit from American sports, and really starts to find out why we don’t have a tournament with the bottom four teams – and why isn’t there an “all-star” match? Boehly said so at a conference in New York on Tuesday evening. The American is well-known in American sports, as he is a co-owner of the baseball team Los Angeles Dodgers and the NBA team Los Angeles Lakers. Terrill / AP The proposal involves holding a match with the biggest stars from the teams in Northern and Southern England on their respective teams. 200 million spent on an “all-star” match The American says the reason he wants such a match is to generate income for the English league system – also known as the football pyramid. – In this year’s Major League Baseball “all-star” game, we generated 200 million dollars from a Monday and a Tuesday, says Boehly. – We think we could get a north versus south “all-star” match in the Premier League, for whatever the pyramid needs, quite simply. When asked what the other club owners in the league think about the idea, he replies that “everyone likes the idea of more income for the league”. The American believes that the development he envisions will happen. Others are more skeptical: – Hey, Todd, we already have “all-star” matches. They are called international matches, writes football legend Gary Lineker on Twitter. What do you think about the proposal? A great idea I’m a bit skeptical It’s the stupidest thing I’ve heard I’m unsure Show result Reacted with laughter So the question is what the managers in the Premier League clubs are thinking. When Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was confronted with the new proposal, he just started laughing. LO: Klopp grinned with his pearly whites when he was asked about Boehly’s proposal. Here from an earlier press conference. Photo: MOLLY DARLINGTON / Reuters – He does not hesitate. He doesn’t wait long. Fantastic, said a laughing Klopp at Liverpool’s press conference, before changing to a more serious tone: – When he finds a date for it, he can call me. He forgets that in the major sports in the USA the athletes have a four-month break, so they are only happy to do some sport during those breaks. It is completely different in football. Klopp explains that he was initially a little surprised by the question with the proposal, before he seemed to think a little more about it: – Imagine players from Manchester United, Liverpool, Everton – all on the same team. Which is not the national team, but only a Northern team. Interesting match, continued the Liverpool coach. – All the London boys together. Arsenal, Tottenham … Fantastic. Did he really say that? Interesting.
