The National Election Jury (JNE) has announced today, May 17, the official results of the first round of the presidential election for the 2026 General Elections in Peru. The proclamation ceremony will take place at the JNE headquarters in Jesús María, Lima. This announcement will establish the two candidates who will advance to the second round on June 7.
This centralized result follows the completion of a decentralized process conducted by the Special Electoral Juries (JEE) across the country, ensuring a thorough review and validation of votes. The event will be presided over by JNE President Roberto Burneo, with representatives from political organizations, international observers, and the media in attendance.
Proclamation Starts at 7 AM
The proclamation ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7:00 AM and will be publicly broadcast via the JNE Media platform. The event will also be attended by Bernardo Pachas, the interim head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE). The two presidential candidates proceeding to the second round will be officially confirmed, in compliance with the electoral regulations. The event is open to the public, allowing participation from political party representatives, authorities, and observer missions.
JNE Calls for Results Proclamation
The JNE formally announced the national proclamation ceremony on Wednesday, May 15, after reaching an agreement in a plenary session and publishing it in an extraordinary edition of the official newspaper The Peruvian. President Roberto Burneo emphasized that this hearing will be open to the public and that transparency is paramount in this process. Additionally, a Committee of Experts has been established to review procedures and improve future electoral processes.
Keiko Fujimori Meets with PPK Ahead of Announcement
In a politically charged environment, Keiko Fujimori, leader of Popular Force, met with former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski shortly before the announcement of the first-round results. Fujimori stated, “Peru cries out to us for peace and reconciliation,” reflecting on the pressing need for unity. This meeting is significant, given their previous electoral history, having faced each other in a tightly contested runoff a decade prior.
Decentralized Proclamation Concludes
The decentralized proclamations wrapped up at noon on Saturday, May 16, with the JEE successfully completing their tasks across all constituencies. As reported by JNE Secretary Yessica Clavijo, 47 out of 60 JEE had finalized the review of election minutes, with the rest concluding on the same morning. The electoral process managed over 60,000 observed minutes, reflecting the election’s complexity.
100% Official Results
With the counting complete, Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza Popular) leads with 2,877,678 valid votes (17.18%), followed closely by Roberto Sánchez (Together for Peru) with 2,015,114 votes (12.03%). Rafael López Aliaga (Renovación Popular) placed third, narrowly missing second place by fewer than 21,000 votes. Both candidates will compete for the presidency on June 7, adhering to the stipulated election timetable under the watchful eyes of the JNE and ONPE. This national proclamation signifies the conclusion of a complex and well-regulated electoral phase in Peru.
