– When I logged into my account I thought: Huh? I don’t have much money? On 1 February, Lillian Christensen (80) woke up to a surprise. Almost a quarter of a million kroner had appeared in the online bank. Sender: Pension company KLP. The mind began to wander, and the questions became many. Lillian Christensen has worked as a nurse in Florø, Ulsteinvik, Finnmark, Gloppen and Sandnes. Photo: Arild Eskeland / news Why am I getting this money? Could they be mistaken? Was it some kind of final sum? But the money had gone to its rightful owner. Christensen has been paid too little pension for 13 years. – I said thank you, it’s perfectly fine with me. But I have never been surprised that I have received too little, says the retired nurse. Calling the situation regrettable But if she had been alone, without her husband Olav, she would have noticed the lack of money better. He has thought a lot about that. Lillian Christensen and Olav Christensen celebrated the sum of money with a glass of wine. Photo: Arild Eskeland / news – They apologized for nothing. I think that’s a bit bad. If I had been alone, those kroner a month would have meant a lot to me, says Christensen. Tore Skeide, director of pension settlement at KLP, understands Christensen’s surprise very well. – This is obviously very regrettable and unfortunate. We are busy cleaning things up when we find discrepancies in the pension payments. There are around 100 people who now get a delayed pension from KLP. The list also includes deceased persons. In these cases, subsequent payments will be made to heirs and estates as far as possible, explains Skeide. Checking routines for errors – With late payment interest, the amount is a couple of thousand kroner and up to half a million kroner at the most, he says. He explains that for some people, the regulations for how an accrued pension is to be treated are different. Skeide says that KLP is now going through the routines to look for problems to prevent such errors. It says that there is still someone on the list who has not received back payment. – We will contact everyone with a letter in which we explain the situation, assures Skeide.
