– I find the ultimate peace and joy up there. It is the first place I want to travel to after a long season. So I’m incredibly happy about it. National team player Morten Thorsby is aiming for the small farm in Lom municipality that he has recently bought. The price is still NOK 7,950,000. The small farm is called “Bakkom” and lies with a view towards Galdhøpiggen 800 meters above sea level. TAKEN OVER: Morten Thorsby is now the owner of this small farm in Lom municipality. Photo: Private – An investment with the heart “Bakkom” has been owned by the Thorsby family for many years, but now the Italy pro has bought and taken over the right of use. – This city has meant a lot to me. It has been in the family for a long time and I have spent a lot of time there since I was very small. In that sense, this was an investment I made with my heart, and not a financial investment, says Thorsby. He adds that the grandmother and grandfather have done fantastic restoration work. – They have made the town one of the best-preserved homesteads in Bøverdalen, says Thorsby. The national team player describes the property investment as a long-term project. – Now my life is “set” for the next few years, but when I finish my career, my life will change quite dramatically. Small farms with animals and farms are both possible, or just as a holiday town. We’ll see, it’s a city that’s close to my heart anyway. I’m just very happy that I can look forward to spending a lot of time there in the future, says Thorsby. CLOSE: It is a short distance from Thorsby’s new property to Galdhøpiggen, which is Scandinavia’s and Northern Europe’s highest mountain. The purchase entails an obligation to maintain the property. – I am very happy to take over the responsibility. In a way, you don’t own places like that. Now it’s my turn to take care of it, and that’s something I really appreciate, says Thorsby. – Could it be that you end up living there? – I have played with the idea. There are others who will have their say in life eventually too, but if it had only been up to me, then maybe. But it is clear that it is for those particularly interested to be up there from November to February-March. It’s a fantastic place, but in winter it might be best to be somewhere else. But we’ll see. I am open to everything, he says. “Waterway project” The environmentally conscious national team player has long since decided on a project he wants to pursue when he is in Lom in the future. He already has a false start on the “waterway project”. THE PROJECT: It is this waterway that Thorsby is working on restoring. Photo: Privat In the old days, farmers had to have water for both animals and land. Therefore, a stream was built to carry water to bring the water down from the mountain and down to their gardens. Since Lom is known for being poor in rainfall, it does not work with rainwater to make the grass grow and thrive. – And I have a wonderful waterway that runs down to my garden. Now I have started an ambitious rehabilitation project to get it back to the way it was, since it has been destroyed. Now I have had two or three summers where I have spent several days up there to fix it back to its original condition. It is a cultural-historical gem, he says. – Having spent two summers on 2.5 kilometres, Thorsby estimates that he has completed just over two kilometers of the seven kilometer waterway that leads down to the newly purchased property. – Where it is destroyed, I have to build up stone and earth on both sides, so that the water continues to flow down. I will do that all the way down. Now I have spent two summers on 2.5 kilometres. I’m trying to get some friends on it. I pay for board and lodging in exchange for them helping me build this waterway, he says. MEMORY: Morten Thorsby has been to “Bakkom” a lot both as a child and as an adult. Photo: Privat On 23 October, the county council in Innlandet adopted a new school structure for the county. It was then decided that several secondary schools, including those in Lom, will be closed. The case caused a lot of noise and frustration. – I have followed the case closely. I recently had three from Lom visit Italy last weekend, which was very nice. I have also gotten to know many others up there. The case has affected the village very much. The school closure affects everyone, and it is something that will cause a stir in the village for a while. It was crazy that it was still like that, but Lom will come back, announces Morten Thorsby.
