– This is a corona project. Then we stopped because we no longer had room. Inside Giert Schiager’s in Trysil, he has set up his own big, small Legoby. The Colosseum, Big Ben, a shoe and various cars are among the works that fill the entire long table. But: – This is far from everything I have built. I do not have room for everything! Lego for adults Lego has long been one of the most popular children’s activities. And it still is to this day. But now more and more adults are opening their eyes to the colorful bricks from Denmark. Lego designer Erik Legernes was the judge and chip master for the program LEGO Masters Norway on TV 2. He thinks there are several reasons why adults now buy Lego for their own use. – One reason is that there are such nice products on the market. ADULT LEGO: Erik Legernes was the chip master in the TV series Lego MASTERS Norway. He says much of today’s Lego is made specifically for adults. Photo: Private He mentions flower bouquets and paintings as examples. Because if you take a trip to the toy store today, you will see that there is a lot that is made for adults. This was not the case before. – It is also comfortable to sit down to build through and have a nice time with the pieces, says the piece master. – Works as therapy Lego builder Giert agrees. He says it can work as a kind of therapy. – You disconnect everything else. It is the creativity that makes it so fun, he says. Giert shows off a piano – by Lego though – that plays music via Bluetooth. – I finished this for my wife’s birthday, and then I played Happy Birthday for her. Lego piano plays Happy Birthday The new puzzle Lego interest has been there since he was little, but it was revived during the shutdown. – It is adults who sit and create these products. So why can’t adults build? DEVELOPMENT: Tractor Giert holder is a car he built as a little boy. About 60 years later, he can now build a Lamborghini. Photo: Simon Elias Bogen / news Legernes in Lego Masters says many of the adults who now buy Lego have had good experience with the activity when they were children. – I gave away a Lamborghini by Lego last time I was in a 50-year-old team. He was very happy, says Legernes. He believes that Lego has become the new puzzle. – There are things you want to have standing in the living room. We even have Marilyn Monroe pictures of Lego that are cool to have on the wall. Big hands – small pieces There are many small details in Lego, and you have to concentrate so as not to build anything wrong. Giert points to an excavator the size of a cat: – The one I worked on for 30 hours. Then I found out that I had inserted a piece incorrectly. Then I had to pick down the whole thing, because then it did not work. – Can Lego be a little annoying at times? – There are a lot of details, but I think it’s just fun. I can sit here and build for 17 hours straight, it’s so much fun! Community for adult Lego builders He says it’s fun that so many adults are doing the same as him. But Giert knows no one in his circle with the same hobby. – It would have been fun to get in touch with someone who was doing it right away! he says. ADVANCED: The Lego builder at Trysil shows one of the many construction machines he has built. This can lift and lower the crane using a vacuum. Photo: Simon Elias Bogen / news On Facebook there is a group with over 5000 adult members. They call themselves Lego enthusiast Norway. Jan Frode Torkildsen is the administrator, and says there is clearly great interest among adults today. – It is a really relaxing and nice hobby for adults as well, he says. Most of the members are over 30 years old. LEGO ENTHUSIAST: Jan Frode Torkildsen is the administrator of the Facebook group, Lego enthusiast Norway. There are over 5000 members and the oldest person in the group is over 70 years old. Photo: Private ran out of space During the pandemic, things really went well with Giert and his wife in Trysil. He built and built, and his wife thought it was all right. But then it said stop after Giert had put the last piece on the colosseum last year. – Then we realized that there was no more room for the Lego. Then the couple put all the Lego in drawers and cabinets, before Giert brought out parts of it when news came to visit. – We want to set everything up in a separate Lego room, and then it can not be too much Lego! The wife is also involved in building, but not to the same extent as Giert. – We think it’s fun to play a little with the roller coaster, he says and goes away to start it. SMALL: After a year without having built Lego, not everything is as easy to get used to again. Here, Giert tries to get started on the roller coaster that runs on an engine. Photo: Simon Elias Bogen / news Does not stop here Even though he has put the Lego purchase on hold, he still walks around the shops to look at the new products. He has no plans to stop the Lego hobby immediately, and looks forward to being able to embark on new Lego projects. But that’s not all he wants to build: – I’m not on Star Wars Lego. I have no sense of that.
